The first thing I will say about my therapeutic approach is this:
I take a naturopathic approach to therapy. That means that I truly believe that our natural state is one of health, happiness and connection. I believe our natural, pure, innate instincts are towards healing and that if we can clean out the "infection" in our lives / memories / psyches / relationships... our natural instincts will lead us toward healing and wholeness.
Therapy differs depending on the unique personality of each client and the therapeutic relationship that we develop. Despite these working differences, my approach comes from one set of beliefs.
Humans are complex creatures - a beautiful combination of mind, body and spirit. If we neglect, wound, or mistreat any area, we loose our ability to live to our full capacity and we become blocked.
People who suffer from disordered eating are often very successful, creative and intelligent people. They can often appear to be well-adjusted. Due to their inner turmoil and often times malnutrition, they may also appear sad, have poor concentration, show increased emotionality or lack thereof. They may feel anxious or as if they have no feelings at all. Many feel a loss of control or as though they cannot fully feel or manage their own thoughts or feelings. Perhaps they feel overwhelmed, stressed out, or even hopeless.
People turn to restrictive diets, starvation, purging and compulsive overeating for many different reasons. Sometimes they are triggered by some of the following:
Each person is a complex being whose mind, body and spirit are inseparable. When we rely on food behaviors to regulate or contain our emotions, to assert control or to protect us, we disconnect from our own bodies, from our loved ones and from the world.
My complete approach values the complex role of mind, body, and spirit and focuses on enhancing your personal strengths and reuniting you with your inner person. My approach is a realistic approach meant to identify triggers and underlying sources of pain and to work toward solutions and resolution so you can experience real change and growth. My goal is to help people:
Not only does the mind and body deserve attention, but so does the spirit. When I say "spirit," I'm really speaking to that part of you that is not just about your roles in life, your clothes, your mind. Some call it soul, some personality. I'm just speaking to the piece of you that feels love, that likes music, that gets "moved," that feels inspired and that has intuition. People who are chronic dieters and those with eating disorders often have quieted their spirits and given attention to only their body. I help people reconnect with their spirit so they not only feel better about food but so they feel they have purpose, insight, can give and receive love.
In order to best respect and cater to each individual's unique personality and strengths, I utilize tools from several therapeutic models including but not limited to:
I also incorporate the care of primary doctors and specialists and work closely with several local nutritionists, psychiatrists and bariatricians.
